In 1918 a group of enthusiasts started a club called The Swedish Protection and
Medical Dogs Club. This Club was directly under The Swedish Kennel Club (SKK).

However, in 1924 the majority of members in the aforementioned club decided
to form their own club to promote the German Shepherd dog and they arranged
working dog trials and shows.
These activities grew and grew as did the number
of members and although the prominent race was the German Shepherd dog
other breeds were also represented.

In 1940 the Kennel Club decided that it would be good if they could incorporate
a club specifically for working dogs, and so they took over the club and called it
Svenska Brukshundklubben (The Swedish Working Dog Club) ranked directly under
the Swedish Kennel Club.

During the year 1960, the club was reorganized and The German Shepherd club
became the breed organisation for the German Shepherd Dog (Avelsförening för
Schäfer = AFS). The letters AFS are still shown in our Official Logo.

The organisation throughout Sweden is thus:
There are sixteen regional districts in Sweden, and each district has its own local
clubs (ortsgrupper). The number of local clubs differ from district to district
depending on the population figures in each district.
